Grade 2 Class![]()
Welcome to Grade Two!
Hooray! There's skating today! Please ensure your child brings his/her skates and a helmet. We will leave the school around 1:20ish. We skate from 1:45 - 2:30. Parents and siblings are welcome. Hope to see you there.
If your child will be receiving confirmation and first communion this year please phone the church office to register. The parent meeting was last week and only four of the expected eight parents were there. You will be informed of the upcoming dates for our meetings to help prepare your child for these sacraments.
Calling all bakers! Our next Grade Two baking affair will be this Wednesday at 1:00 - 2:00 in the kitchen. I have only heard thus far from two parents who can make it. We will be making banana chocolate chip bread. Once again we are looking for parent leaders who will lead a small group of students to culinary success. Please phone the office or send a note to confirm your availability. Thanks in advance.
Our spelling focus continues to be with reviewing magic e with the focus on long u words. There are three ways to achieve the /long u/ sound: ue; ew; u_e (i.e. pew; clue; cube). Please help your child study the words over the week for our usual spelling test on Friday. Please note there are two spelling groups.
In Math the students are reviewing fact families (i.e. 7+8=;8+7=;15-7=;15-8=). We are working with the sums and differences to 18. Please support them with these bigger number sentences. We will be setting up a math fact display showing what facts we know really well. A suggestion is to practice with math flashcards with the basic addition and subtractions facts to 18. Your child should feel comfortable with the 'doubles' (i.e. 2+2; 3+3=; 4+4 etc.) Ask your child to share the strategies: adding nine (i.e. 5+9=); doubles (i.e. 6+7=)
Students were invited last week to bring in photos of their pets for our display---Our Pets! We are still accepting photos! We are studying animals this term in Science. Our focus for this week is: animals and winter. New vocabulary: migration; hibernation; dormancy, adaptations
January Scholastic Book orders have 'mostly' arrived (still waiting on two). February Scholastic book orders will be sent home on Wed., Feb. 1st and will be due on Tues., Feb. 7th.
Every Wednesday for this term, Mr. Toner will be teaching basketball skills for Grade Two`s. I will be a silent partner during these classes.
Next week is Catholic Education Week! There are a lot of exciting events planned for the week. On Monday, Feb. 6th the whole school will be going skating in the afternoon! Hooray, Hooray, we get to go skating again! Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming events!
